Ardantane Yule Celebration
December 20, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Celebrating the Winter Solstice
Merrymakers will gather at Ardantane on Friday, December 21, to celebrate the old Celtic/Norse holiday of Yule, or the Winter Solstice. The public is invited, and we will begin gathering at 6:00 pm; the program will start at 6:30.
Yule, meaning “wheel,” is the old festival celebrating the shortest day and longest night of the year, the time when the Wheel of the Year begins turning toward spring and the warm season. Similar festivals were commemorated by the Romans and other ancient civilizations to mark the “rebirth” of the sun.
Many old customs are still in use today: the decorated tree, the Yule log, the wassail cup, gift-giving, and kissing under the mistletoe are part of the pre-Christian traditions.
The program will be suitable for adults and children. There is no charge for this event, although donations are always appreciated, for maintenance and improvement of the facilities.
In an effort to reduce Ardantane’s environmental impact, we ask that if you can, please bring your own feast gear: plate, bowl, cup, and flatware. This will reduce a lot of paper waste! Thank you!
Those who have questions or need directions to Ardantane (about 6 miles south of Jemez Springs) are invited to call Amber at (505) 469-7777.
